The Three B’s Are The Only Way To Be!
Clear Expectations: I begin the school year by establishing clear and age-appropriate behavioral expectations. I collaborate with my students to create a set of simple, positively stated rules that cover various settings in the classroom, such as the carpet area, desks, and group workspaces.
Teaching Expectations: I explicitly state my classroom expectations using visual aids, role playing and real life scenarios to help them understand what is expected of them. I also reinforce these expectations regularly through reminders and discussions.
Behavioral Matrix: At my current school site, there is a behavioral matrix that outlines specific behaviors expected in different settings. For example, in the classroom, students should raise their hands to speak, while in the hallway, they should walk quietly. This is displayed in the classroom as a visual reference.
Positive Reinforcement: I emphasize positive reinforcement to motivate good behavior. I use a clip chart, and reward students based on a point system where students can earn prizes. Additionally, the use of positive-reinforcement tickets are given. For students on an IEP or 504, they will have individualized behavior plans.
Acknowledgment and Praise: Whenever students display the desired behaviors, I acknowledge and praise them immediately. I am specific in my praise. For example, "I love how Sarah is sitting quietly and listening during our reading time."
Consistency: Consistency is key to PBIS. In the classroom, I ensure that consequences for inappropriate behavior are also consistent and aligned with the PBIS framework. These consequences should focus on teaching rather than punishing.
Parent Involvement: I communicate my PBIS strategies with parents and encourage them to reinforce positive behaviors at home. I also send home daily reports highlighting their child's achievements.
Professional Development: I am continuously developing my PBIS skills by attending training sessions and collaborating with colleagues who are implementing PBIS.
